Charter-mandated Fund for parks, greenways, and historic preservation

Hi all,

To follow up on the charter-mandated funding for parks, greenways, and historic preservation that I mentioned at last night’s city council meeting, please find below the relevant section in our charter. It appears this obligation expires next year in FY 25.

Section 901.K Knoxville City Charter

Fund for parks, greenways, and historic preservation. Effective beginning with the mayor's annual budget submitted to the council by the first day of May, 2005, and continuing for each fiscal year thereafter to the year 2025, two hundred fifty thousand dollars ($250,000) each year shall be placed in a special trust fund account maintained by the department of finance. These funds and any interest accruing thereon shall be used by the mayor and council, when appropriated by ordinance, exclusively for land acquisition and capital projects for parks, greenways, and historic preservation within the City of Knoxville. These funds may not be used for annual operating costs.
